complete medical assessments
While pets can often dread coming to the vet’s office, pet parents should make it a habit to bring in their pets for a complete medical assessment. Veterinarians often recommend that pets have at least one veterinary exam annually. Usually, senior pets or pets with chronic diseases benefit from coming in more often. These exams play a vital role in your pet’s health assessment and early detection of diseases.
We work with rescue organisations and dogs with behavioural issues are not uncommon in our practice. Please notify us of any reactivity problems or behavioural issues prior to exam so we can make accommodation for you and your pet to make this experience as stress free and safe as possible.
What information should I know before a veterinary exam?
As a pet parent, be prepared to answer questions about any changes in your pet’s diet, activities, physical changes, or any health concerns that you might have noticed (e.g. any worrying signs related to behaviour). This information can help our veterinarians correlate their findings.Â
What happens during the exam?
In a veterinary exam, Dr. Milcius will examine your pet’s body. He will check various body parts such as the ears, eyes, nose and oral cavities to check for any abnormalities. Skin and hair coat are also examined for dermatological issues, ticks and other parasites. He will assess the pets joints and gait for any injuries or signs of arthritis, a common disease amongst pets. We also check their heart rate and take your pet’s temperature and weight. If your pet is over or underweight, or has suspected food allergies, the doctor is happy to consult on nutrition that best suits your budget and pet’s needs.Â
diagnostic imaging
X-rays are not just for broken bones! Diagnostic imaging enables us to examine your pet’s body to determine issues such as the size of the heart and the quality of his or her lungs, intestines, liver, spleen, and bladder. Our digital radiograph system takes X-rays in a matter of seconds, limiting the amount of exposure and stress to your pet. It also allows us to easily transfer the images taken so that you are able to view them with a doctor during the exam.

phone consultations
Phone consultations can not be substituted for in person examination, but here at Avenida Pet Clinic we understand that sometimes it is not possible, difficult and too stressful to bring your pet to the clinic for a variety of reasons. In these situations consultation over the phone might be an option for you.
